Brain Injuries, Traumatic and Anoxic. If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with serious brain-related illness, you may find yourself searching for information and answers to so many questions and concerns.
You are not alone. Brain Injuries affects millions upon millions of people in the U.S. and abroad. Their effects are far-reaching, extending beyond those with the chronic brain illnesses to include their families, friends, and colleagues. This is why it is important to address the concerns of people suffering from brain-related illness as well as those who care about—and for—them.
What is Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI)? TBI, a form of acquired brain injury, occurs when a sudden trauma causes damage to the brain. The damage can be focal - confined to one area of the brain - or diffuse - involving more than one area of the brain. TBI can result from a closed head injury* or a penetratinghead injury. A closed injury occurs when the head suddenly and violently hits an object but the object does not break through the skull. A penetrating injury occurs when an object pierces the skull and enters brain tissue.
What is Anoxic Brain Injury? Adequate oxygen is vital for the brain. Many factors can cause the brain to receive inadequate oxygen. When oxygen levels are significantly low for four minutes or longer, brain cells begin to die and after five minutes permanent anoxic brain injury can occur. Anoxic brain injury which is also called cerebral hypoxia or hypoxic-anoxic injury (HAI) is a serious, life-threatening injury; it can cause cognitive problems and disabilities.
What is the prognosis? Recovery depends on how long the brain has been deprived of oxygen and how much brain damage has occurred. But the human brain is unique and truly...... an amazing organ. Many times, doctors assume the worst prognosis too early and force negativity in the path of a possible recovery! Because so many factors affect the course of a chronic brain illness, it is difficult to predict the prognosis when the possibilities for the Miracle of Life is really in the hands of God.
The Miracle of Life Foundation (MLF) is a non-profit organization dedicated to helping you find answers to many of your questions and concerns about cerebral hypoxia; provide up-to-date information on the latest research; provide advice to help people with cerebral hypoxia; provide their family, friends and caregivers with resources to find better answers to their questions and concern; and to extend to the community more specific support relative to cerebral hypoxia and the possibilities of recovery. This organization is inspired by the life of Darryl Perry. The doctors gave up on Darryl Perry because of his life threatening brain illness diagnosis. The Miracle of Darryl Perry's Life through his faith in God, support from his family, and his remarkable daily medical recovery, is a testament that the Miracle of Life is indeed within the power of God's hands - not man!!
